The spectacular topography of a multi-river valley intersected by several finger ridges leading up to the mountains created the perfect setting for 18 fantastic holes. San Buenas Golf Resort is the latest creation of Dan Lavis, a Canadian golf course architect.
In July of 2007 the initial routing plan was completed by Dan. The initial layout was confirmed and the location of 224 specimen indigenous trees were positioned by GPS coordinates. Dan was provided with this GPS data and re-routed several holes to ensure the preservation of these great natural resources and take advantage of the mature trees which add to the playability and beauty of a golf course.
Paspalum is native of Australia. It is a warm season perennial grass. The benefits of Paspalum are:
- Tolerance to high saline (salt) levels. This turf can even be sprayed with salt water.
- Low fertilizer requirements.
- Thrives in moist climates. Paspalum tolerates wet conditions well.
- Minimal dew collection. Paspalum exudes a natural “waxy” coating minimizing dew and raindrop collection thus creating quicker drainage. Add the fast-draining local sand and gravel soil under the turf, and playability will be great immediately after heavy rains.
We broke ground in April 2009, and opened the first 9 holes in 2010, combining links, tropical forest and an astonishing mountain view. The existing 9 holes are Par 37, over 3700 yards long from the back tees, and affordable from the blue, white or red tees. The grass we use is Paspalum, a salt water resisting turf that is ideal for this climate and conditions. The greens are big and fast, with challenging slopes and always well protected by strategically placed bunkers. The fairways are rather wide, but with deep rough, and water hazards longing or crossing.
San Buenas Golf Resort offers everything for an enjoyable round of golf, like carts, pull carts, rental clubs, also for left handed, both men and women.
Our philosophy is simple, we might not always be able to control lie of the greens; we certainly can’t predict the weather any more than the meteorologists can, but we can control our service to you.
It’s not all about golf. It’s the total experience that you have when you come through the door. Our goal is to be the Friendliest Course in Costa Rica!
Other courses might have nicer greens (though we haven’t seen them) or fancier clubhouses (probably without Wi-Fi), but no one will treat you as well as we do or provide you with a better value.
Welcome to the club. We hope you are as glad to be a part of our family as we are to have you in ours.
