San Buenas Golf Resort is so much more than a place you go to play golf. In addition to our water management and reforestation projects, the local community of San Buenaventura is perhaps our greatest resource. The SBGR vision includes significant investment into the people and infrastructure of the town. These projects include…
Escuela San Marcos Grand Opening was July 21st, 2009, the Escuela San Marcos is a completely new two-room schoolhouse for 28 local children kindergarten to grade 6. The materials were donated by MOPT and a prominent local developer. All labor and construction was completed by the SBGR staff. The School features include- an upgraded electrical system, greatly improved drainage and an edible garden (fruits, herbs and medicinal plants) for landscaping. The building also includes a complete recycling center to educate children in the importance of recycling.
Recycling ProgramsWhen SBGR started work there was no functioning recycling program. Many local businesses and residents desired a program but nobody could sustain the effort required week after week. SBGR jumped right in to help. The plastic, glass and aluminum can recycling of 90 businesses were picked up on bi-weekly basis using SBGR trucks, employees and volunteers. This equates to six trucks filled to capacity every two weeks. Our program was an extension of the Tres Rios recycling program and all materials were taken to the Tres Rios recycling center located east of Coronado. Our sustainability coordinator is part of committee forming a pilot program for recycling for the entire Osa Canton. This program is important to us, as it follows our philosophy to reduce, recycle and reuse. We are happy to report our new development is recycling more than any other in the southern zone. The program was successful and has been taken over by the Municipal Government of Osa.
Local hiring practicesOur goal is simple — employ every willing person in the town of San Buenaventura at some point. Currently, we employ 20 men and women in various capacities. We are providing training and education plus all materials for them to excel in their given job. Our belief is a strong San Buenaventura means a strong San Buenas Golf Resort & Spa.
River Rehabilitation Project Each year the town of San Buenas is subjected to flooding during the rainy season. The river quickly rises up, badly eroding the banks and adding to the buildup of sediment which causes the river to flood into the town. The object of the project is to lower the banks of the river allowing the swollen waterway to access low land parts of the golf course, creating a natural floodplain on SBGR property and not into the town. Playability is not expected to be adversely effected. The banks will also be reforested and thus additionally stabilized. Our proposal was accompanied by the signatures of over 200 people in the local area requesting a speedy approval. This project is complete and the results have been wonderful – no town flooding!
Road ImprovementsSBGR is part of the San Buenaventura road committee dedicated to improving road conditions. SBGR will be donating manpower and equipment on a regular basis to this end. Currently, there are talks to improve 5 kilometers of road (beginning at the Costanera Highway) to a standard of 14 meters wide, improving access and commerce in the town.
